It has been 4 months since we last were able to obtain any
of this fantastic salt from Italy. Thankfully, the wait is
over and we are breathing a sigh of relief. Vignalta has
become one of our most popular items and it is wonderful
to have it back. Just in time for summer cooking !

Italian Farro
We have
some wonderful, organic whole grain farro from one of our
favorite producers - Tenuta Castello in Piedmont. Farro is
an ancient Italian grain with a firm, chewy texture and a
nutty flavor. You can use farro as you would use brown
rice as a side dish, salad condiment or an alternative to
potatoes or rice. Simply boil farro in salted water for a
few minutes until cooked, drain and add fresh tomatoes,
extra virgin olive oil and fresh herbs. Garnish with
grated Grana cheese if you like. The Vercellone family has
been cultivating grains for over 100 years in the heart of
the Po Delta near Vercelli, Italy. Their Tenuta Castello
products are farmed organically, and their grains are
processed in traditional mills that leave much of each
grain's kernel intact without polishing or shining. The
result is superior flavor, structure and consistency with
a high nutrient content.
~ also
from Tenuta Castello ~
organic,
traditionally processed stone-ground polenta made from
three heirloom varieties of red corn (Marano, Astice and
Quattro File). Its whole grain flavor and rustic texture
distinguish it from other non-artisan polentas. Delicious
with a ratatouille-style topping of fresh summer
vegetables

Wish you had a
good tomato knife ?
Your wish is answered. We
have a drop-dead summer deal on a very terrific knife for
you. We have priced our
Wusthof-Trident 6” fully-forged serrated slicing knife at
the crazy special price of $48.95.
The list price on this knife is $90.00 and our normal
discount on full-priced Wusthof knives brings it down to
our everyday price of $67.50.
But for the summer tomato season, you can steal one from
us for a mere $48.95. This knife not only slices through
the biggest field grown tomatoes like a hot knife through
butter, but it is sturdy enough ( and big enough ) to
slice dense salamis and other European-style dry sausages
and small breads and baguettes. No kidding, this is a
great deal and a must-have knife this time of year.

Introducing…….our own olive oil
‘Poggio Noho’
It’s no
secret that we love great olive oil and vinegar. One of our
favorite olive oils is from the Assisi-Spoleto region of
Umbria because it is un-pretentious and well, just plain
good. Hence, we looked there for a producer who could craft
an olive oil that fit our idea of something luscious and
wonderful. Poggio Noho is made with Leccino and
Frantoio olives, varieties that may be familiar to those
of you who know Tuscan olive oils. But Poggio Noho
has a balanced style and sweetness, qualities often missing
from its Tuscan cousins. Our goal was to find an extra
virgin olive oil that marries well with food and would not
shout at you from the plate. We are thrilled that we have
found it in our Poggio Noho.
Flavor characteristics:
Pure,
clean, and blessed with harmonious aromas of fresh herbs and
artichoke. This carefully nurtured olive oil is the perfect
capture of freshly squeezed olives.
Style:
medium,
fruity and spicy
Poggio
Noho is a great gift for anyone out-of-town that loves

Katz & CO
insanely flavorful Napa Valley vinegars
We can thank the California grape
for giving us more than just lush, gorgeous wines. A several
year over -abundance of grapes has led to the creation of
notable vinegars that are made from these quality grapes. Our
friends Albert and Kim Katz are making superb vinegars the
old-fashioned, European way by aging the vinegars in wooden
casks for several months. This allows for the slow passage of
time and the wood to work its magic on the flavor of these 100%
grape vinegars, something which commercial vinegars are not
privy to. Vinegar is the backbone of a good vinaigrette and when
vinegar is this good you can also use it to make simple sauces
to add flavor to steamed or blanched vegetables or grilled fish.
Grab a white and a red one and you are all set for a summer of
delicious eating.
